PRAYERS

This is our Prayer page, please use this as an inspiration during your own prayer times; and please leave us your prayer requests at the bottom of the page, help us to reach out to you in our prayers at Good Shepherd.

Prayer for Spring

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfil.

Prayer for Fall

Heavenly Father, thank you for being at work in this Fall season. During this season of change we are reminded that you are with us through all the seasons of life. We praise you! We worship you! We give you glory!.

Prayer during Recession

In this time of recession,
we remember all those who have financial
problems and are finding life difficult.

We hold before You, O Lord,
all those who are fearful for their jobs,
all those who are desperately looking for work
and all those who have become depressed and
have given up looking.

May Your Holy Spirit
come among us to heal the tensions
of this time and
calm the many fears.

And with Christ by our side,
make us aware of each other’s troubles
so that we may
reach out our hands with
His friendship and give unstintingly
of His love.

AMEN

The Lord’s Prayer

When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen’.

Prayer for our nation in these times

Heavenly Father, You are Lord over all and Lord of all, and we praise you. Today, O God, we pray for the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate as they continue to deliberate over the health care reform act. Guide them according to your will, that what they accomplish may bless us. For Jesus’ sake, amen.

For an End to Abortion

Oh God who is the Beginning and
the End, hear our prayers as we cry
out to you to end the merciless shedding
of innocent blood in our nation
and throughout the world. Through
death you have conquered death and
through your life we experience eternal
and everlasting life. Cause life to
spring forth in the hearts of all people
and bring forth a love and respect
for life that will dominate our culture.
May your kingdom and church
apprehend and overtake the culture
of death that has prevailed through
deceit and selfishness; may the Seed
of the woman crush the serpent’s
head; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

The Prayer of St. Patrick

I CB033027arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ’s birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgement of doom.

I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me;
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a mulitude.

I summon today all these powers between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom,
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man’s body and soul.
Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation

+The Jesus Prayer+

“Lord Jesus Christ Son of The Most High God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

As medicine, the Jesus Prayer is destructive of the passions and altering of conduct. Just as a doctor places a dressing on a patient’s wound, and the dressing works without the patient’s knowing how, calling on the Name of God “removes the passions” without our knowing how and why.

A prayer for today

Lord, for tomorrow and its needs, I do not pray; Keep me, my God, from stain of sin just for today. Let me both diligently work, And duly pray. Let me be kind in word and deed, Just for today. Let me be slow to do my will, Prompt to obey; Help me to sacrifice myself Just for today. And if today my tide of life should ebb away, Give me thy sacraments divine, Sweet Lord today. So for tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, But keep me, guide me, love me, Lord, Just for today.

St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 A.D., Bishop, Teacher, and Theologian)

  1. Please pray for all the people on the Gulf Coast who will suffer economically and emotionally from the devastating oil leak heading directly for them. Many people could lose their jobs and businesses from this disaster. Lord Have Mercy, Christ Have Mercy, Lord Have Mercy.
